THE STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT / THE UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK / ALBANY, NY 12234 Office of P-20 Education Policy |
In accordance with Section 2, Part B of Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2018, beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, and continuing every year thereafter, all public elementary or secondary schools with at least seventy percent or more of its students eligible for free or reduced-price meals under the federal National School Lunch Program are required to offer all students a school breakfast after the instructional day has begun, “Breakfast After the Bell.”
In an effort to assist districts required to comply with this new state regulation, the 2018 state budget provided $7,000,000 for districts to purchase equipment and supplies necessary to successfully implement the Breakfast After the Bell (BAB) program.
Schools that were required to implement a BAB program in the 2018-2019 school year that did not receive the full entitlement of $5,000 per eligible school in the 2018-2019 school year may still apply for funding if the school is required to implement a BAB Program again in the 2019-2020 school year. The funding is not available for those schools that are newly required to implement a BAB Program in the 2019-2020 school year.
A school that submitted a waiver request for the 2018-2019 school year, and is on the 2019-2020 mandatory list and will be operating a BAB during the 2019-2020 school year, is eligible to receive the $5,000 grant funding.
Schools that are co-located in the same building are not individually eligible for an equipment grant through this funding opportunity, as only one Equipment Grants was approved per address location. Therefore, the co-located schools will be eligible to receive one combined grant totaling $5,000.
Please carefully review the attachments below. Eligible districts are encouraged to complete the attached application to request a maximum of $5,000 per school building location (one grant per physical address location). Schools that received an equipment grant for less than the $5,000 during the 2018-2019 school year and are on the mandatory list for the 2019-2020 school year can apply for the remainder of the grant during the 2019-2020 school year.
Questions regarding the BAB Equipment Grant should be directed to Tara Webster or Colleen Hasselbach at (518) 473-8781.
